8(A) MENTOR-PROTEGE PROGRAM :: The 8(a) mentor-protege program is designed to encourage approved mentors to provide various forms of assistance to eligible 8(a) program participants.  This assistance may include technical and/or management assistance, financial assistance, subcontracts, or assistance in performing government contracts.  This page provides additional information about how the mentor-protege program works.

What is a Mentor?
Any business that demonstrates a commitment and the ability to assist developing 8(a) companies may act as a mentor under this program.  This includes businesses that have graduated from the 8(a) program, firms that are in the transitional stage of the 8(a) program, other small businesses, and large businesses.  A mentor must demonstrate that it possesses favorable financial health, possesses good character, does not appear on the federal list of debarred or suspended contractors, and can impart value to a protege.  Once approved, a mentor must certify annually that it continues to possess good character and a favorable financial position.

What is a Protege?

In order to qualify as a protege, an 8(a) company must be in the developmental stage of the program; have never received an 8(a) contract; or have a size standard that is less than half the size standard corresponding to its primary NAICS Code.  A 8(a) company must also demonstrate that it is in good standing under the 8(a) program to be considered for a mentor-protege relationship.

Need Help?
8(a) companies can reap major benefits through forming mentor-protege relationships in pursuit of government contract opportunities.  However, the risks of establishing such relationships without appropriate legal advice are high.  A company that establishes and pursues a mentor-protege relationship in violation of the requirements of the SBA may be subject to suspension or termination from the 8(a) program.  For assistance in forming a mentor-protege relationship with another business, contact us for a consultation.
