DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION ::  The Department of Education (ED) was established in 1980 by the Department of Education Organization Act (Public Law 96-88 of October 1979).  ED works to: 1) promote equal educational opportunity for Americans; complement the efforts of states and other entities in improving the quality of education; encourage the involvement of the public, parents, and students in Federal education programs; promote educational research; and Increase the accountability of Federal education programs to  Congress, and the public.
