FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT / PRIVACY ACT :: Enacted in 1966, the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. § 552, provides one of the principal avenues to obtaining government records.  FOIA provides that any person has a legal right to federal agency records, except where such records (or portions of them) are protected from disclosure by one of nine "exemptions," or by one of three "special law enforcement record" exclusions.  This page is devoted to information and resources about FOIA and its companion law, the Privacy Act of 1974.
